New York is home to not only a lively cosmopolitan center and beautiful Appalachian scenery, but to a wide range of opportunities in the health care profession as well. Many will find a range of opportunities to start or continue a career as a nursing assistant within the state’s numerous hospitals, nursing homes and specialized medical facilities.

The first step to doing this is to get certified to work as a nursing assistant within the state. For most people, this means paying for a series of courses that lead up to this certification, something not everyone may have the initial funding to do. For those who are struggling to come up with the initial funds, there may be some options to help reduce or eliminate these costs. One option would be to check with the New York branch of the National Association of Health Care Assistants to see if they have any scholarship funds for qualified individuals. Another is to check with medical facilities themselves to see if they offer any reduced cost or free courses to students who are willing to agree to work for them after certification.

Health care professionals such as nursing assistants are in high demand around the nation and New York is no exception to this growing trend. Jobs are available at present in a wide range of fields and opportunities are projected to grow within the next ten years. Nursing assistants may be able to find work within a particular specialty area they find interesting and should look not only to state and private hospitals for employment but to nursing homes and long term care centers, home health care businesses and a variety of other medical facilities as well.

Nursing assistants who are planning to work in the metro New York City area, will find some of the largest salaries in the nation, ranging from $24,000 to $37,000. Of course this is a reflection of the extremely high cost of living in this area. In smaller cities, salaries are more comparable to those in the rest of the nation, with nursing assistants earning from $20,000 to $31,000 annually on average. Of course, neither of these ranges is a guarantee of salary, as personal experience, location and the type of facility will play a big part in your final take home pay.
