So you’ve completed your nursing assistant courses and now all that’s left is to take your nursing assistant exams to ensure that you’re state certified and ready to get a job in this field. While any test can be nerve racking, with some preparation and attention to detail, you can easily pass your CNA exam with flying colors. The first part of being prepared is knowing what to expect. Your exam will be composed of two parts, the first testing you on your written understanding of the concepts that have been presented and the second testing you on your physical ability and skill at performing them in a real life setting.

The written part of the test will ask students questions about basic care giving and medical concepts that should have been covered during the course or in the accompanying reading material. For the most part, these questions will be fairly straightforward and some many even just be common sense. If you feel unsure about your ability to answer, there are numerous places online where you can find some practice questions that reflect the kind of material you’re likely to see on the test you can make sure you’re prepared before going in to the test.

The clinical part of the test forms the bulk of what you’ll be doing to get your certification and can be the most intimidating for students. You’ll be asked to perform anywhere from 3 to 5 nursing assistant skills while a state approved medical examiner observes you. While this can be particularly nerve racking for some students who don’t like feeling like they’re on stage having their every move watched, with preparation and careful attention to detail, most students will do just fine. Some important details to remember are washing your hands correctly, ensuring patients have privacy rights respected, act in a dignified and professional nature and pay attention to your and the patient’s safety at all times. While each exam will be different, students may find they are tested on skills like changing a bedpan or linens, repositioning and grooming patients, or taking temperature.

While the process of taking the exam can take a toll on your nerves, just remember that once it’s complete you’ll be fully prepared to start your new career as a nursing assistant.
