While the bulk on CNA training programs are still found in hospitals, community colleges and local vocational schools, an increasing amount of online training programs are available as well. These programs are designed to provide quality education to those with busy schedules who may need to fit their training into what free time they have rather than try to plan around classes which may not always been convenient.

Online education programs will vary in their methods of teaching and the materials that they provide. Some will send DVDs while others will have a large amount of written material for you to read and soak in. Either way, students in these programs will be largely independently responsible for the pace and depth of their studies. Those who do not study well on their own may not take away as much of the material as they would in class and this factor needs to be kept in mind.

An important aspect to consider before taking an online program is the fact that not all come with a clinical component. This means that students will not get hands on access to patients and practice in a real world setting before they attempt to take their certification exams. For some, this will not be a problem as seeing it done on a DVD or online video will be enough. For others, this hands-on experience is an integral and essential part of the learning experience. Look for online programs that combine the in-class elements with at least a few hours of real clinical training for the best and most effective experience and prep for tests.

The convenience of online CNA programs comes at a cost, however. Many professionals feel that these programs do not adequately prepare students to work in their field and that traditional in-class programs are much more effective and useful instead. It may be a better choice for those with previous experience who need to be recertified than for those who are coming into the field fresh. The ultimate decision is up to you, however, and you will know what level of training you need and how you best learn and will be able to use this information to make an educated decision.
